Tinubu met with Fubara in London over political crisis in Rivers

President Bola Tinubu reportedly met with Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers state, in London last week.

According to Africa Report, two unnamed aides to the president confirmed the meeting took place.

Tinubu had departed Abuja for Paris on April 2 for a two-week working visit.

After his stay in Paris, Bayo Onanuga, presidential spokesperson, said Tinubu travelled to London before returning to Nigeria on April 21.

The meeting with Fubara was reportedly at the instance of the suspended governor, who is said to be keen on returning to office.

During their discussion, Fubara promised to make some compromises to resolve the ongoing political crisis in Rivers.

Aides privy to the discussions said negotiations are ongoing, noting that there is a possibility that Fubara’s suspension may be lifted before the six-month deadline.

On March 18, Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers, citing the protracted political crisis.

The president also suspended Fubara as the governor, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers assembly for an initial period of six months.

Tinubu appointed Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired vice-admiral, as the sole administrator of Rivers.
