The Nigeria Police Force has invited Muhammadu Sanusi, the Emir of Kano, for questioning over alleged killings that happened during the recent Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
The police asked Sanusi to report to the Force Intelligence
Department headquarters in Abuja on April 8.
During the Eid-el-Fitr celebration on Sunday, some members
of a vigilance group who were said to be part of Sanusi’s entourage were
allegedly attacked and killed.
Sanusi presided over the Eid prayer at the popular Kofar
Mata Eid prayer ground in Kano.
Abba Yusuf, governor of the state, and other government
officials attended the Eid prayer session.
While returning to his palace, violence broke out within
Sanusi’s entourage.
In a letter dated April 4 and signed by Olajide Ibitoye,
commissioner of police, on behalf of the deputy inspector-general of police in
charge of the force intelligence department (FID), Abuja, the police asked
Sanusi to attend an investigative meeting on the incident.
“Your availability is highly sought for a purposeful
investigation,” the letter reads.
On Wednesday, the Kano police command constituted an
eight-member panel to investigate the killing.
Abdullahi Kiyawa, the Kano police spokesperson, said the
incident occurred despite the ban on durbar activities by the force.
The command had invited Wada Isyaku, the Shamakin Kano, for
questioning over the incident.
Kiyawa said Surajo Rabiu, a vigilante from Sabon Titi Jaba
quarters, was “stabbed to death” while another vigilante, Aminu Suleman,
sustained injuries.
“The panel’s terms of reference will focus on unravelling
the remote and immediate causes of the unfortunate incident and any defiance to
the command’s overt ban on all forms of durbar/horse-riding throughout the
Sallah Celebration, based on security concerns in the state,” the spokesperson
said.
