PDP governors set August 28 for national convention, move NEC meeting to May 17

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have fixed August 28 for the national convention of the party.

The governors conveyed the development in a communiqué issued on Monday after their meeting in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

The PDP convention is a gathering where members of the national working committee (NWC), responsible for the day-to-day activities of the party, are elected.

The governors also moved the national executive committee (NEC) meeting scheduled to be held on May 15 to 27.

“The Forum resolves that working in conjunction with the National Working Committee (NWC) and other relevant organs of the party, to hold a NEC Meeting on the 27th of May, 2025; constitute a Zoning Committee that will address all issues relating to zoning of party offices and hold an early convention in August 2025, precisely on the 28th, 29th and 30th in the ancient city of Kano,” the communique reads.

The forum recommended the constitution of the zoning and national convention committees for ratification by the NWC and NEC.

They appointed Douye Diri, governor of Bayelsa, as chairman of the zoning committee, with Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara, as vice-chairman, and Caleb Mutfwang, governor of Plateau, as secretary.

The forum named Ahmadu Fintiri, governor of Adamawa as the chairman of the national convention committee; Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, as the vice-chairman; and Peter Mbah, governor of Enugu as secretary.

Following the supreme court judgement on the national secretary position, the governors recommended that the deputy national secretary should serve in “acting capacity until a substantive secretary is nominated from the south-east zone and ratified by the NEC at its next meeting”.

The meeting was attended by governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), and Peter Mbah (Enugu).

Also present were Akon Eyakenyi, deputy governor of Akwa Ibom, and Monday Onyeme, deputy governor of Delta.
