A boat belonging to the Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) burst into flames on Thursday morning at the Ipakodo terminal in Ikorodu.
The boat was conveying 19 passengers to the Victoria Island
area when the fire incident occurred around 6am.
In a statement, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA)
said all passengers and crew members were evacuated safely.
The agency said four passengers were injured during the
incident and are receiving treatment.
“Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s emergency
response team swiftly mobilized to the scene, working in close coordination
with LAGFERRY, other boat operators and first responders to manage the
situation effectively,” the statement reads.
“We are pleased to report that all passengers and crew on
board were evacuated safely, though four passengers suffered minor injuries and
are currently receiving medical attention.
“We are currently conducting thorough preliminary
investigations into the cause of the incident, collaborating with LAGFERRY and
other stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive assessment.
“Safety is our utmost priority, and we are committed to
implementing any necessary recommendations to enhance fire prevention measures
throughout the Lagos waterways.”
In November 2023, a commercial boat caught fire at the
loading point in Ikorodu.
The fire outbreak was caused by an electrical spark during
ignition as the captain and deckhand poured fuel in the engine.
