The Ebonyi government has denied claims that Francis Nwifuru, governor of the state, directed the arrest of five commissioners for alleged contract breaches and delay in project completion.
Media reports on Tuesday quoted Ilang Donatus as announcing
the arrests after Nwifuru allegedly accused them of sabotaging projects.
Ilang is the chairman of the Ebonyi executive council
committee on supervision and completion of two state housing projects.
In a counter-statement, Ilang rejected the report as “false
and unfounded”, adding that it was a figment of the imagination of the authors.
“No commissioner was arrested, and you can confirm this from
the police and other security agencies,” NAN quoted Ilang as saying in a
statement.
“The people writing such fake news are doing so from their
imagination.
“We informed them of the state governor ‘s displeasure over
delays in the project and resolved to take drastic actions on the defaulters.
“The governor is desirous to give the people of both
communities affected by a fratricidal communal conflict, housing reprieves.
“We gave all persons involved in the projects time to comply
with the contractual terms.
“Our mandate is to ensure that the governor’s noble
intentions towards people of both communities are actualised and we would not
toy with such.”
Joshua Ukandu, the Ebonyi police command spokesperson, also
said no commissioner was in their custody.
“We did not arrest any commissioner,” Ukandu said.
The state government initiated 140 housing units in Ishielu
LGA to support the Izzo and Amaze communities displaced by the Ezilo/Ezza Ezilo
communal crisis.
