Aminu Baba Dan Agundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba of Kano
Emirate, has cautioned that Muhammadu Sanusi II risks facing contempt of court
charges if he continues to present himself as the Emir of Kano.
Speaking at a press conference at Nasarawa Palace, where
Emir Aminu Ado Bayero currently resides, Dan Agundi referred to a ruling by the
Court of Appeal in Abuja, which directed all parties to maintain the status quo
ante bellum.
He argued that this ruling effectively means Sanusi is no
longer the 16th Emir of Kano unless a higher court overturns the decision.
Dan Agundi emphasized that the order must be obeyed, warning
that if Sanusi defies it, he has the right to take legal action for contempt.
The Court of Appeal ruling restrained the Kano State
Government and other respondents from enforcing an earlier judgment that
reinstated Sanusi, pending an appeal before the Supreme Court.
It also mandated that all parties maintain the situation as
it was before the Federal High Court’s June 13, 2024, decision.
Additionally, the court required the applicant to file an
undertaking within 48 hours, agreeing to compensate the respondents if the
order was later deemed unjustified.
