President Bola Tinubu has admitted that it was a tough decision to remove the subsidy on fuel, but Nigerians must face the hard decision.
Tinubu disclosed this on Friday while receiving a delegation
from the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, at the Presidential
Villa in Abuja.
The conference was led by Lucius Ugorji.
Tinubu acknowledged the hardships faced by Nigerians due to
ongoing economic reforms.
He said the measures implemented were necessary to build a
resilient nation and secure a better future for generations to come.
According to him: “Yes, removing the fuel subsidy was hard,
tough for me, but it’s a hard choice that Nigeria must face. We are not going
to bankrupt our country.
“We were spending the investment of the future of our
children yet unborn; we were spending their rights. Poverty has no religious
basis. It affects all, and we must fight it together.”
Tinubu also pointed out that poverty transcends religious
and ethnic divides, stressing that Nigerians and leaders should unite in
addressing the issue.
On May 29, 2023, Tinubu had announced an end to the fuel
subsidy regime.
The President made the announcement during his presidential
inauguration in Abuja.
