The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has downplayed concerns over former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar’s engagement with Social Democratic Party of Nigeria (SDP) member Hamza Al-Mustapha, asserting that such discussions do not threaten the party’s stability.
PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim
Abdullahi, stated that the party remains focused on aligning opposition forces
against the ruling party.
He emphasized that Atiku’s interactions with other political
figures were his personal decision and not an official position of the PDP.
“As a party, we do not have a problem with engagements
across the opposition. We will be meeting for alignment and realignment of
forces against 2027. This is not an issue of concern for us,” Abdullahi stated.
Regarding speculation that Atiku might defect to the Social
Democratic Party (SDP), he maintained that the PDP would address the situation
if it arises.
“If he decides to leave, that would be his prerogative. No
individual is indispensable in the party,” he added.
Abdullahi also addressed the ongoing legal battles involving
former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who has secured court orders preventing
the PDP from expelling him.
He described these legal maneuvers as efforts to destabilize
the party but insisted they would ultimately fail.
“These court orders are becoming excessive, but PDP has
always defied the odds. We have survived various political challenges, and this
too shall pass,” he remarked.
Reaffirming PDP’s resilience, Abdullahi highlighted the
party’s historical achievements, including economic growth, democratic reforms,
and anti-corruption initiatives.
He noted that despite setbacks, the PDP remains the most
enduring political force in Nigeria.
“Since Nigeria’s First Republic, no political party has
lasted as long as PDP. We governed for 16 years and left Nigeria as one of the
fastest-growing economies. Our legacy is undeniable, and the party will renew
itself,” he concluded.
As the political landscape continues to shift, PDP appears
intentional on maintaining its relevance, even as internal and external
challenges test its cohesion.
