United States’ allies must start looking out for themselves, the Canadian government has warned.
Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney, said this in reaction
to the inadvertent leak of classified military plans by senior US officials.
It was revealed that a popular journalist working with the
Atlantic magazine was accidentally invited to a group chat of top US officials
discussing airstrikes against Yemeni rebels.
The Canadian prime minister described the intelligence
blunder as a “serious, serious issue and all lessons must be taken”.
The prime minister said it would be critical to see “how
people react to those mistakes and how they tighten them up”.
Canada is one of the members of the
Five Eyes intelligence sharing network. The other members are Australia, New
Zealand and the United Kingdom.
Canada and the US are grappling with a rapidly deteriorating
relationship since President Donald Trump United States came to power.
Carney, however said that he is focused on protecting his
country while planning for the worst.
