U.S. President Donald Trump has explained his decision to pardon offenders involved in the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol building in Washington.
Trump had signed the corresponding order in the White House in Washington just a few hours after his swearing-in on Monday.
Recall that on January 6, 2021, supporters of Trump violently stormed the U.S. Congressional seat in Washington, where the Republican’s election defeat to Joe Biden was to be certified at the time.
A crowd incited by Trump, who held a rally to promote claims of election fraud, violently entered the building, killing five people.
However, during a press conference on Tuesday announcing the AI investment, Trump was asked by reporters about his sweeping pardons for the roughly 1,500 people charged in connection with the U.S. Capitol riot in January 2021.
The U.S. leader said those offenders have served years in jail, adding that their lives have been ruined.
“Only for one reason: they have served years in jail,” Trump said. “Murderers don’t even go to jail in this country.”
“Their lives have been ruined,” he added.
