Donald Trump has been sworn in as the 47th president of the United States.
Trump was sworn in on Monday in Washington DC. JD Vance, the
vice-president, was sworn in by Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
In his inaugural address, the US President said, “the golden
age of America starts now.”
Trump said he would end the “weaponisation” of the justice
department, wowing that “the scales of justice will be rebalanced”.
Hours before the change in US leadership, outgoing President
Joe Biden issued pardons for members of the committee investigating the January
6 Capitol riot.
He also issued preemptive pardons for James and Frank, his
brothers; Valerie, his sister; and their spouses.
Trump said his presidency would be marked by a strong
pursuit of excellence.
“It is my hope that our recent presidential election will be
remembered as the greatest and most consequential election in the history of
our country,” he said.
Trump won the US presidential election on November 6, 2024,
after exceeding the magic number of 270 electoral college votes by six extra
points.
Kamala Harris, former vice-president, had 219 electoral
college votes in the tightly contested poll.
The Republican has now made a return to the White House
after serving as the 45th president of the US from 2017-2021.
The president said he would sign a number of executive
actions on his first day in office to “reshape” America.
