Tinubu worried over incessant petrol tanker explosions, says Shettima

Vice-President Kashim Shettima says President Bola Tinubu is concerned and disturbed by the frequency of tanker explosions in the country.

On Saturday, many were reported dead after a petrol-laden tanker exploded at the Ugwu-Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

The fire reportedly burnt scores of people to death and destroyed about eight vehicles.

In a statement on Monday, Shettima decried the incessant petrol tanker explosions in the country, noting that “it is time to put an end to the issue”.

“It was with a heart full of sadness that I received news of the fuel tanker explosion that occurred on Saturday, January 25, 2025, in the Ugwu Onyeama local government area of Enugu State,” the statement reads.

“I am deeply saddened that another tanker accident would lead to the loss of lives of Nigerians, leaving others injured in the gory incident.

“His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, is seriously worried by the frequency of these tanker explosion incidents on public roads and residential areas, which are ordinarily avoidable.”

The vice-president commiserated with the people and government of Enugu over the petrol tanker explosion.

He added that Tinubu has directed the relevant agencies to ensure that there is an end to such explosions in the country.

“Just as he has directed the relevant agencies in his message of condolence on Sunday, I want to reassure Nigerians that the government will stop at nothing to put an end to tanker accidents on our roads,” Shettima said.

“I express my profound condolences to the government and people of Enugu state, particularly the families that lost their loved ones and those that are undergoing treatment for various degrees of injuries in the hospitals.

“While my thoughts and prayers are with you, I pray Almighty God to grant eternal rest to the souls of the departed and quick return to health for the injured.”

There have been increased cases of petrol tanker explosions that have claimed hundreds of lives and caused numerous injuries across Nigeria in recent months.

On January 18, at least 98 persons were reportedly killed in a petrol tanker explosion at Dikko junction in the Gurara LGA of Niger state

Earlier in the month, two people reportedly lost their lives in a petrol tanker explosion in Agbor Town, Ika LGA of Delta state.

In November 2024, another explosion occurred at the Jigawa-Kano border in Dutse LGA, Jigawa state.

Similarly, in October of the same year, a tanker explosion in Majia town, Taura LGA, Jigawa, killed over 140 people.
