The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) says it has arrested two suspects in connection with the kidnapping of the wife of Hakeem Odumosu, a retired assistant inspector-general of police (AIG).
A statement by Muyiwa Adejobi, force spokesperson, said the
suspects, identified as Agbojule Smart and Keleke Michael, were apprehended
early on Friday as they attempted to leave Lagos state.
Adejobi said the suspects confessed to being part of the
gang that abducted the victim on January 16 in Ogun state.
He added that police recovered N2,250,000, which was part of
the ransom paid by the victim’s family, along with two locally made rifles and
11 live cartridges.
“The suspects were arrested in the early hours of today,
24th January 2025 while on their way out of Lagos state,” Adejobi said.
“Upon interrogation, they confessed to their crime;
belonging to a gang of 4, 2 of whom have been neutralized previously.
“Recovered from the suspects upon their arrest were the sum
of Two Million, Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N2,250,000), which was
part of the requested ransom, 2 locally fabricated rifles, and 11 live
cartridges.”
The arrest comes a day after the police announced the rescue
of Odumosu’s wife.
According to the police, she was freed following a gunfight
at the kidnappers’ hideout. Two of the suspects were killed during the
operation, while others escaped.
Adejobi said the police also recovered four AK-47 rifles,
three locally made single-barrel rifles, various ammunition, and N10 million in
ransom money.
