Yeni Kuti, the singer, has criticised actress Ngozi Ezeonu’s
recent comments about “inappropriate dressing” at auditions.
Ezeonu had advised aspiring actresses to dress modestly,
particularly during auditions.
The ace actress even went as far as questioning two ladies
about their decision to attend an audition without wearing a bra.
“Any other day I am on any audition table, and anybody comes
in dressed like this, I will disqualify that person. How can you come to an
audition ground without a bra?” she asked.
However, Kuti disagreed with Ezeonu’s views, arguing that
young ladies should be allowed to explore their fashion choices at their age.
Speaking on the latest edition of ‘Your View’, the singer
said she felt the actress’ criticism was unwarranted.
The 63-year-old daughter of the late Afrobeat legend also
suggested that Ezeonu, 59, should simply reject anyone who doesn’t meet her
dress code standards instead of the criticism.
“I think it was not really any of her business. All she had
to do was reject them, saying, ‘I do not want people who dress like you.’ I do
not want to be a hypocrite because I wore tight jeans and a small top when I
was that age,” she said.
“… I think as old people, we forget what we did. So when we
criticize young people, we have forgotten what we did at a younger age. At 24,
I had flat tummy. But if you wear it now and people see me, they would say, ‘Aunty,
what’s wrong that you are showing this your belle?’ Because it is her set, she
can say she does not want them on her set. The country is hot, and these ones
do not want to sweat.
“All I am saying is when we grow, we should look back at
what we wore before we judge. I do not know what you look like at that age.
Show me your picture of that age.”
