The national assembly joint committee on finance has queried the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for allegedly generating N5.2 billion but only remitting N1.9 billion to the coffers of the government.
The committee grilled Clement Oladele, an assistant corps
marshal in the FRSC, when he appeared before it to defend the agency’s 2025
budget.
During the session, Ireti Kingibe, senator representing the
federal capital territory (FCT), while pointing out the “discrepancy”,
expressed her dismay over the situation.
“You said your revenue for 2024 is N5.2 billion, but you
just said you remitted N1.9 billion. So I don’t understand. I am confused,” he
said.
The senator said some FRSC officials told her that their
bosses give them daily monetary targets of how much they must generate
everyday.
“I was about to turn into my street. There were FRSC people
all over the place and I wondered why and they stopped the car in front of me.
I told my driver to stop because I want to know what he has done,” he said.
“I called the road safety people and they said his tyres
were bad. I said look at them, they are brand new so I decided to make a fuss –
why did you not give him a receipt? They go ‘Madam we have to bring a certain
amount of money or else we will get into trouble’.
“I said to him ‘you will leave here right now and tell them
that senator Kingibe drove you’.
“You will not go to Nicon junction where they are loading
(passengers) on an express road but you are here residential, nothing is
happening here.”
On his part, the FRSC official said all the revenue
generated has been remitted to government coffers.
“The entire money generated by FRSC is fully remitted. We
generated N5.2 billion. The breakdown – fines is N1.9 billion,” he said.
