The 2023 governorship candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has said the queues for food across the nation during the festive season are an indication of the hardship Nigerians are going through under the President Bola Tinubu administration.
The Labour Party chieftain said he has never experienced such a scenario in his adult life.
A number of stampedes where dead bodies were recovered across the country, including Abuja, the nation’s capital.
A similar incident occurred in Anambra State where not less than 20 residents of the Okija community died in a stampede that occurred during an event organized for the distribution of rice.
It was also reported that over 35 people, mostly children, died during a stampede at a carnival in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.
Rhodes-Vivour said there was nothing wrong in a government embarking on macro economic reforms but faulted the government’s lack of plans to cushion the hardship and effect that the everyday Nigerian would face as a result of such moves.
“You can have a macro economic plan if you are thinking that way, then you should also understand the shock it’s going to do on the ground. So, what did you put in place?” He said on Thursday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today.
“There was a point when they said they were transferring money to people. Monies that we couldn’t account for, monies that we couldn’t trace.
“Huge amount of money that just apparently went to the system and disappeared. Without any accountability for it. There was a point when they were sharing food and then there were stampedes at Customs.
“I mean you saw the amount of stampedes that happened this yuletide season. Never in my adult years have I seen Nigerians so desperate to get food.
“You say a place was going to open at 9am, at 3am people were already queuing for food? That shows the hardship Nigerians are facing.” he lamented.
