Deji Adeyanju, the human rights activist, has alleged that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is prosecuting Omoyele Sowore because of his criticism of Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP).
On Monday, Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African
Action Congress (AAC) in 2023, arrived at the force headquarters in Abuja for
questioning following his invitation by the police.
The police had invited Sowore for questioning over
allegations of cyberstalking, negligent acts, and intimidation.
The police invitation is connected to a viral video wherein
Sowore confronted officers who had stopped his vehicle at a checkpoint in
Lagos.
Providing an update on the invitation, Sowore said he
rejected the bail conditions set by the police, which required him to deposit
his international passport and present a level 17 civil servant as a guarantor.
Speaking with journalists on the matter, Adeyanju, one of
the lawyers who accompanied Sowore to the force headquarters, said the police
set “outrageous and charade” bail conditions for the activist.
Adeyanju said the police have demonstrated a lack of
interest in addressing serious policing matters while focusing on less
important issues.
“I’m seeing a situation where Omoyele Sowore is being
persecuted by Egbetokun-led police,” he said.
“Sowore has been vocal in criticising the IGP for staying in
office beyond the prescribed term. He said the IGP is an illegal IGP.
“The IGP has seen a good opportunity to persecute Sowore.
Sowore is excited about the idea of police intimidation and harassment.
“We have done an interview with them; they are refusing to
release him on self-recognition and instead issued an outrageous bail
conditions.”
