The federal high court in Abuja has granted bail to Omoyele
Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in 2023, in
the sum of N10 million with one surety.
Musa Liman, the presiding judge, ordered Sowore to deposit
his passport with the court registrar on Thursday.
Liman ruled that the surety must have verified landed
property in the federal capital territory (FCT).
After the ruling, Marshall Abubakar, counsel to Sowore,
urged the court to release his client to the legal team with a few hours
pending the fulfillment of the bail condition.
The judge granted Sowore a 24-hour time extension to remain
with his lawyers.
The case was adjourned to April for continuation of trial.
On Wednesday, the police arraigned Sowore on a 16-count
charge bordering on cybercrime allegations.
The police had accused Sowore of describing Kayode
Egbetokun, inspector-general of police, as “Illegal IGP” through his X handle.
The activist pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
On Monday, Sowore was detained by the police after he
honoured an invitation at the headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
Although the police granted administrative bail to Sowore,
the activist rejected it and described the bail conditions as “ridiculous”.
