Nigerians will choose their leader in 2027… Akume’s remarks laughable -Buba Galadima

Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has described recent remarks from George Akume, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), as “laughable”.

On Sunday, Akume asked northerners nursing presidential ambitions to wait till 2031 — after incumbent President Bola Tinubu would have completed a second term in office.

He also urged Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, to keep his presidential ambition on ice until Tinubu leaves office.

Reacting to the comments, Galadima said “how people feel now in their body will determine the way they vote in 2027”.

The NNPP chieftain spoke during an interview on News Night, an Arise Television programme.

He declined weighing-in on the subject through a regional lens, adding that a leader’s effectiveness and ability to keep promises should be the sole criteria for public office.

Galadima condemned attempts to suppress political rivalry and alleged maneuvers by the current administration to compromise the integrity of the democratic process.

“I wouldn’t want to discuss Nigerian issues on the basis of north and south. I’m a nationalist,” he said.

“What the people feel now in their body will determine the way they vote in 2027. There is a big vacancy; in fact, there is nobody occupying that seat in 2027, according to the Nigerian constitution. So, Akume’s assertion is only laughable.

“There is no amount of intimidation by anybody, no amount of killing by anybody, that will stop Nigerians from producing an alternative presidential candidate to run.

“We know as of today that this government in APC are sending emissaries to compromise leaders of political parties, offering tens of billions to leaders of the parties.

“They are promising all political parties to align with the agenda of the present government so that in 2027, there will be no candidate.”

The NNPP chieftain implored Nigerians to ensure the integrity of elections.

“I’m extremely happy that, through the ballot box, Africans can change the government. All of us must stand up to ensure that happens in our country, and that is not for politicians alone,” he added.
