Stanley Alieke, counsel to the controversial rapper Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has announced that the singer has been granted bail after spending nearly a month in police custody.
Alieke shared the update via his Instagram account on Monday,
stating, “Apki has been granted bail by the court,” without providing
additional details.
Speed Darlington was arrested on November 27 during a
performance in Owerri, Imo State. His arrest was reportedly linked to an
alleged verbal attack on Afrofusion star Damini Ogulu, widely known as Burna
Boy.
Deji Adeyanju, another lawyer representing Darlington,
alleged that Burna Boy was behind the rapper’s arrest.
Darlington had earlier criticized Burna Boy for his
association with embattled U.S. rapper Sean
“Diddy” Combs, who is currently facing allegations of sexual
exploitation and human trafficking.
Following his arrest, Darlington vowed to continue speaking
out against Burna Boy despite the controversy surrounding his comments.
He had declared his intent to hold the Grammy winner
accountable for his ties to Diddy.
Prior to the bail grant, Adeyanju had revealed that the
rapper would either be arraigned or released within 48 hours.
“Our FREP application for Speed Darlington a.k.a has been
granted by the court. He is to be arraigned within 48 hours or released. Issues
around injustice may take time, but justice will always prevail,” Adeyanju
stated.
