Deadly gas leak at Georgian Ski Resort claims 12 lives

A tragic carbon monoxide leak has claimed the lives of 12 people at a ski resort in Gudauri, northern Georgia, police announced on Monday.

The victims, including 11 foreigners and one Georgian national, were discovered in a sleeping area located above a restaurant at the popular ski station.

Authorities have stated that preliminary investigations revealed no signs of violence on the bodies, pointing to an accidental gas leak as the likely cause.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly toxic, colorless, and odorless gas that is often produced when fuels like natural gas, wood, or charcoal are burned incompletely. Exposure to CO can result in severe poisoning and death due to oxygen deprivation.

Local authorities are investigating the incident, with forensic teams conducting detailed examinations at the site. The nationalities of the foreign victims have not yet been disclosed.
