Former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, has said Nigeria’s 1999 constitution must be abolished.
Anyaoku said Angel Gabriel can’t save Nigeria if it
continues with the 1999 constitution.
Speaking in Lagos, the former Commonwealth Secretary-General
said the 1999 constitution will prevent Nigeria from realizing its full potential.
He insisted that the constitution is a major impediment to
Nigeria’s unity, stability, and development.
According to Anyaoku: “Nigeria was more united, more stable,
and developing towards its potential,” he said, contrasting that era with the
current stagnation.
“As long as Nigeria continues to operate under this
constitution, even an angel like Gabriel cannot save it.”
Anyaoku explained that pluralistic nations thrive when they
address their diversity through true federal constitutions, which allow for
regional autonomy and decentralised power.
He stated that Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution failed to
accommodate the country’s diverse cultural and regional landscape, stifling the
nation’s capacity for cohesive development.
