Ufuoma McDermott, the Nollywood actress, has opened up on her battle with stage four kidney disease.
In a recent episode of the WithChude
podcast, the 43-year-old revealed that she had been battling with disease for
about 12 years.
Ufuoma said she had initially been diagnosed with stage
three but it later progressed to stage four because she failed to listen to the
advice of her doctors.
The movie star added that it got so bad last year that she
thought she “was going to die” because she had pushed her body. She also talked
about her negotiation with her doctor regarding work and rest.
“My weight, people do
not understand when I say I cannot afford to put on weight, I do not want to
die. I have little children. I had pushed my body and it was borderline stage
4,” she said.
“Last year was a very trying time in my life where I thought
I was going to die. I have battled chronic kidney for a while, for about 12
years now. I was negotiating with the doctor, she said ‘I need you to go home
and rest’.
“But I was like ‘what if I go home… I promise you if I sleep
today, before I leave tomorrow…’ She said ‘Ufuoma I need you to sleep now, if
you can take tabs and just sleep. I need you to rest, I need your blood
pressure to drop.’ She mixed up my medications for me, long and short is that I
went back on set.”
In 2017, the actress revealed that she lost her brother to
kidney failure.
