Strike continues despite one month salary paid – SSANU, NASU to Nigerian govt

The Joint Action Committee, JAC of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions, NASU says their strike will persist despite the Federal Government’s release of only one month’s salary out of the four months owed to university workers.

The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation had on Saturday announced the release of the withheld salaries, yet the partial payment did not change the unions’ determination to strike.

SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim pointed out that many university officials, including Vice-Chancellors, bursars, and registrars, are also affected by salary delays, exacerbating the disruption of university operations nationwide.

Ibrahim said the strong compliance among union members, stating that 98 percent of their members have complied with the strike and they will not return to work until their demands are fully met.

He confirmed that while some members have started receiving payments only one month of the four months owed has been released.

He explained, “Yes, they paid one month out of four months. We shall be meeting to appraise the situation. Not everyone has received it so far.”

The indefinite strike, which began on Monday, has led to a complete shutdown of university activities across the country.
