Electricity price cheapest in Nigeria – Power Minister, Adelabu

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu has said that electricity is cheapest in Nigeria compared to other African countries.

Adelabu disclosed this on Thursday when he received the Secretary of the Lottery Trust fund, Tosin Adeyanju at his office in Abuja.

According to Adelabu, Nigeria and the World in general grapple with two basic problems: Food and Energy security.

“All over the world today, we are faced with two basic issues and these are food and energy securities

“It is worth noting that the price of electricity is still the cheapest in Nigeria compared to even other African nations,” he said.

He added that, “if Nigerians are patient, they will realize that the government means well for them”.

On his part, Adeyanyu said his visit to Adelabu was to seek how to partner on solar energy

Meanwhile, Adelabu’s comments come as Nigerians face high energy costs, from petrol and diesel to electricity.

Electricity distribution companies in Nigeria charge N209.5 per Kilowatt-hour effective 1st July 2024 for customers in Band A, getting 20-22 hours.

Recall that on April 3, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission approved a 240 percent electricity tariff hike to N225 per kilowatt-hour from N66.

It was observed that the cost of electricity in Senegal and Togo is N296.10 and N353.68 per kilowatt-hour, respectively, higher than that of Nigeria.

However, the cost of electricity is cheaper in Ivory Coast, which is at N195.76 per Kilowatt-hour and in Ghana at N205.62 per Kilowatt-hour as of April 2024.
