Ned Nwoko, the husband of actress Regina Daniels, has defended his wife following backlash over her comments on the #EndBadGovernance protest.
The nationwide protest, which began on August 1, saw some
Nigerians taking to the streets to decry poor governance and the soaring cost
of living in the country.
In response, President Bola Tinubu, in an August 4
broadcast, urged protesters to end their actions in favour of dialogue.
The 23-year-old actress found herself at the center of
controversy after she criticised acts of violence by some protesters.
Her remarks led to intense criticism on social media, with
many users accusing her of speaking from a “privileged position” and being out
of touch with the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
Addressing her critics, Daniels acknowledged her privilege
but argued that it does not diminish her concern for the economic challenges
bedevelling Nigeria.
She said even from her privileged position, she is affected
by the nation’s challenges, adding that her domestic staff and those around her
also bear the brunt of the rising costs.
Backing his wife, Nwoko, who represents Delta north in the
senate, took to Instagram to praise Daniels for her wisdom and strength to
stand with Nigerians at a critical time.
The businessman added that as a senator, his legislative
efforts have always focused on the welfare of the people.
“I commend Gina’s wisdom and strength of character in
deciding on her own to sympathise and support Nigerians showing bottled-up
frustrations with the apparent hopelessness in the country,” he wrote.
“Please let everyone be peaceful with the protests, as there
cannot be any justifications for more loss of lives.
“As a senator, my
bills and motions have been about the people. This is really my passion”.
