Exploring the chance-based nature of casino games

Casinos and their games are an institution that has been around for centuries now. From Blackjack to Baccarat and Roulette to Poker, there is a wide variety of classic games that are well-established names.

While the exact odds and amount of player decision-making involved in casino games varies, the fact remains that these games are all chance-based at their core. There is no way to guarantee the outcome of a casino game, whether you’re playing in a land-based venue or a casino online.

Before you start a game it’s worth going more in-depth into the chance-based nature of these classic games, so you understand exactly how they work.

The role of randomness in casino games

The core of every casino game rests on the concept of randomness and chance. There is always a degree of unpredictability built into a casino game, whether that’s the spinning of the Roulette wheel, the roll of the dice in Craps or the shuffling of the deck in Blackjack.

How each casino game achieves that random nature varies, but all casino games and their components are subject to regular audits to ensure that no bias is occurring. In some cases, dealers may use automated shuffling machines to make sure that the result of the next card deal is impossible to predict.

Another measure that games like Blackjack take to protect the element of random chance is increasing the number of decks in play. In many physical casinos, dealers will use as many as eight decks in a game, making it far harder to predict which card could come out of the deck next.

Online casino games take a different approach to randomness, as they are entirely digital in nature and have no physical game components to rely on. This is where the random number generator (RNG) comes in, as these computer algorithms are designed to replicate the random chance of a physical game.

RNGs generate sequences of thousands of numbers in any given second, with a set of numbers locking in once active play is initiated. Each number corresponds to a position on the Roulette wheel, a playing card, a dice face or a symbol on the slot reels, which allows the computer to determine the game’s outcome.

Understanding odds and the house edge

While random chance means that each game’s outcome remains independent and fair, that isn’t the end of the story. All casino games are designed to favour the house over the long term, something known as the house edge.

This doesn’t impact individual game results, but it is a measure that makes sure that the casino will come out on top on the whole. This is especially apparent in games like Roulette, where the presence of the zero pocket – and potentially the double zero pocket – gives the house increased odds. The same is true in Blackjack, where the player conducts their turn before the dealer and may go bust before the dealer’s full hand is revealed.

All online casino games offered by reputable providers will list their house edge upfront, offering players useful insight into the odds of each specific game.

The chance-based nature of casino games is essential to bear in mind, no matter what game you might be playing. As games remain random in the name of fairness and unpredictability, it’s impossible to know the outcome of a game until it has played out.
