Paris 2024: Super Falcons bow out after 3-1 defeat to Japan



The Super Falcons of Nigeria bowed out of the women’s football event at the 2024 Olympic Games following a 3-1 defeat to Japan


Japan settled down quickly into game pinning Nigeria back.


Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made a a superb save to deny the Japanese in the seventh minute.


Japan continued their dominance with Osinachi Ohale making a vital block nine minutes later.


The pressure paid off for the Asian champions with Chelsea forward Maika Hamano handing her team the lead in the 22nd minute.


Mina Tanaka doubled the advantage 10 minutes later.


The Super Falcons fought back with PSG new signing Jennifer Echegini pulling a goal back three minutes before the break.


Hana Kitagawa however restored Japan’s two-goal cushion in first half stoppage time with a sublime free kick.


The Super Falcons dominated possession in the second half with the Japanese sitting back and trying to hit back on the counter.


Japan were awarded a penalty in the 52 minute after Rasheedat Ajibade was adjudged to have pulled an opponent inside the box.


The decision was however rescinded but the centre referee after a VAR review.


Nigeria finished bottom of Group C with zero point from three games.
