The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has said the Nigerian government will sanction electricity distribution companies, DisCos, that fail to supply 20 hours of electricity to customers in the Band A category.
Adelabu disclosed this on Tuesday via X.
He said the recent tariff hike is targeted only at
electricity consumers under the Band A category, getting at least 20 hours of
power supply.
Recall that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission,
NERC, last Tuesday increased the electricity tariffs of customers under the
Band A category to N225 per kilowatt-hour from N66/kWh.
The hike has caused uproar among Nigerians since its
announcement.
Identifying some of the provisions under the tariff
adjustment reform, Adelabu noted:
“Federal Government to save N1.5 trillion with tariff
adjustment.
“Federal Government still subsidizing Bands below A.
“Pricing changes will help increase liquidity to the NESI.
“DisCos will be sanctioned for supplying less than 20 hours
of electricity to Band A customers”.
He, however, did not state the nature of the sanction.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Society of Engineers tasked NERC to
impose strict sanctions on Discos that fail to supply Band A customers 20 hours
of power.
