Youths ‘kill’ army captain, two majors, 12 soldiers in Delta communal clash

Tukur Gusau, director of information at the defence headquarters, says sixteen Nigerian soldiers on a peace mission, were surrounded by youths and killed on Thursday, in Okuoma Bomadi LGA of Delta state.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Gusau said: “The troops of 181 Amphibious Battalion, Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, while on a peace mission to Okuoma community in BOMADI LGA of Delta State were surrounded by some community youths and killed on Thursday, 14 March 2024.”

“The unfortunate incident occurred when the troops responded to a distress call after the communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities both in Delta State,” he said.

“The reinforcement team led by the Commanding officer was also attacked, leading to the death of the Commanding officer, two Majors, one Captain, and 12 Soldiers.”

Gusau added that some suspects have been arrested over the incident, and that Christopher Musa, chief of defence staff, has directed an immediate investigation.

He also said the incident has been reported to the Delta state government.

“CDS has directed the immediate investigation and arrest of those involved in the heinous crime. The occurrence has been reported to the Delta State Govt,” the statement adds.

“However, the military remains focused and committed to its mandate of maintaining peace and security in the country.

“So far, a few arrests have been made while steps are in place to unravel the motive behind the attack. Additional details later.”

Clashes between military personnel and restive communities are rife in Nigeria’s oil rich Niger Delta region.

  3. When a Nigerian soldier is killed, it is a heinous crime but when soldiers go to leave a community desolate it is called peace keeping. Is it not UN-dictionary and very sarcastic expression. By the way when has communal clash become invasion of territorial integrity that would warrant soldiers to be deployed. Let us go back to the laws establishing all these institutions for effective operations. While i condemn the bizarre killing of the soldiers, i also want to use this medium to ask the federal government and the military high command to send the soldiers back to the barracks where they belong. Communal clashes can be handled effectively by the Nigerian police and not the Army.
