The Governor of the Central Bank, Olayemi Cardoso, has explained that the apex bank has continued to share information on Binance with other Nigerian government agencies.
Cardoso disclosed this on Tuesday at the 294th Monetary
Policy Commission Meeting Press Briefing in Abuja.
According to him, the information from other agencies was
very positive.
He, however, clarified that it is not under its purview to
regulate Binance but that the Nigeria Security and Exchange Commission.
“The CBN considers ourselves to have the wellwithdal to
collaborate with other government agencies. That is a very important function.
Where we see that we can work together, we do so. As I said about Binance a
month ago, we did a collaboration with law enforcement agencies, the Economic
Financial Crime Commission, and the Office of National Security Adviser.
“It is a work in progress, but it has been very positive. We
have been sharing information. It is not our responsibility to regulate
Binance, but it is the responsibility of the Security and Exchange Commission.
Also, the issue of detained Binance Executives is the issue of the National
Security Adviser”, he said.
Recall at 293rd MPC, Cardoso raised the alarm that $26
billion from unknown sources flowed through Binance in One Year.
The development has resulted in Months of faceoff between
Nigeria and Binance.
The tension between the Nigerian government and Binance took
another dimension when one Binance executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, escaped lawful
custody in Nigeria.
