The Nigerian government has vowed to impose a 50 per cent sanction on electricity distribution companies over incessant outages and poor service delivery to consumers.
On Monday, Musiliu Useni, the vice chairman of the Nigerian
Electricity Regulatory Commission, disclosed this in a statement on the
commission’s X account.
He urged DisCos to improve their performance or suffer
consequences.
“NERC will look at performance on a case by case basis.
Sanctions and actions will not be the same. Ensure that you improve your
efficiency. If your efficiency is at the level expected, you will get your full
OPEX. If you don’t perform, you will only get 50% of your admin OPEX,” he said.
Recall that in the past weeks, there has been reduced
electricity supply in parts of Nigeria.
Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, the firm that
services the southeast said in a statement on Monday that the drop in power
supply is beyond the organization.
Recall that the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, had
blamed gas constraints and debts for the drop in electricity supply nationwide.
As a solution, Adelabu inaugurated a committee to fix the
drop in electricity supply nationwide.
However,it was gathered that elliptic power supply has
been unabated in some parts of Nigeria.
