Fulham manager, Marco Silva claimed Alex Iwobi is in good mental state after the social media criticism that trailed his performance for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Iwobi was scapegoated after the Super Eagles 2-1 defeat to hosts Cote d’Ivoire in the final of the competition.
The 27-year-old received support from Nigeria’s sports minister, John Enoh, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and his teammates.
The versatile midfielder flew to London on Wednesday after the Nigerian squad were hosted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Iwobi had since returned to training with Fulham and is in contention to face Aston Villa on Saturday (today).
Silva said the former Everton star has put the incident behind him.
“Mentally, he’s very good. Alex is a happy boy when he’s on the pitch doing what he loves, he’s always doing it with a smile on his face. I know part, I don’t know everything what people said about it,” Silva told a press conference.
“I don’t see reasons because if you lose a game you lose a game together, if you win a game you win together of course. They did brilliantly until the final.
“They lost the final and the people reacted they think that is the best. In my opinion it was completely unfair because of the way they criticized him on social media. It’s more strange when there is no reason to do it.
“Since he arrived here, of course I had a chat with him. He’s going to be involved in the game tomorrow, him and Calvin Bassey.”
