The federal and state governments are currently mulling the establishment of state police in a bid to combat the lingering security crisis in the country.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation,
Muhammed Idris, stated this on Thursday while briefing the state house
correspondent after meeting with President Bola Tinubu and state governors.
The move followed the recent surge in the activities of the
daredevil bandits and other criminal elements causing mayhem in the country.
According to the Minister, although the governments have
agreed to consider the calls to establish the state police, more work may still
need to be done.
He said, “The federal government and the governors are
considering the possibility of establishing state police. Of course, this is
still going to be further discussed, and a lot of work has to be done in that
direction.
“The federal and state governments are agreeing to the
necessity of having state police. This is a significant shift, but like I said,
more work needs to be done.
“Many meetings will happen between the FG and the
sub-nationals to see the modalities of achieving this”.
