Fuel subsidy back in full force – Ex-TUC President, Peter Esele

Former Trade Union Congress, TUC president, Peter Esele, has alleged that the Federal Government resumed payment of fuel subsidy.

Esele made the claim during an interview on Channels ‘Sunrise Daily’ show on Tuesday, February 20.

Esele said in part: “Fuel subsidy is back, this is not something we should be arguing about, it is back and it’s even back in full force.”

Recall that President Bola Tinubu had on May 29, 2023 announced that fuel subsidy was gone, saying the country can no longer subsidise the cost of fuel for its citizens.

Reports earlier emerged last week indicating that petrol subsidy returned and is now bigger than the amount being paid before the president stopped it.

According to BusinessDay, the country is paying about N907.5 billion subsidy on premium motor spirit, PMS popularly known as petrol monthly.

This may not be unconnected to the country’s foreign exchange crisis, which reportedly pushed the actual cost of litre of fuel to N1,203 in some parts of the country.
