Vice-President Kashim Shettima says clowns are celebrating the impending implosion of Nigeria’s economy after the naira depreciated to N1,500 on Tuesday.
He spoke on Wednesday at a public engagement on youth,
religion, and the fight against corruption, at Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.
On Tuesday, the naira dropped to N1,482.57 against the
dollar at the official window, surpassing the black market rate of N1,470.
Furthermore, on Wednesday, the FX rate crossed the N1,500
mark at the parallel section of the foreign exchange (FX) market.
Speaking on the issue, Shettima encouraged Nigerians to work
together to revive the economy.
“Yesterday when the naira plummeted to N1500 to the dollar,
instead of us to come into a single force and salvage our economy, sadly, some
clowns are celebrating on Twitter of our impending implosion of the Nigerian
economy,” he said.
He said the country will rise from the ashes.
On January 28, Shettima had said the federal government will
not implement any policy that will have a detrimental effect on any region of
the country.
Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned FX
authorised dealers, as well as their customers, to desist from giving
inaccurate and misleading information about their transactions.
The apex bank added that all eligible transactions are
permitted to access foreign exchange at the official window.

It is unfortunate but more of a dis-service to the nation that government over the years have been unable to create avenues for production of exportable goods that will enable us earn dollar and compete with other countries but instead, continues to play politics instead of governance. This is a shame.
