President Bola Tinubu congratulated Governor Babajide
Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on his victory at the Supreme Court on Friday.
President Tinubu congratulated Sanwo-Olu for his victory
with a “warm handshake.”
This happened shortly after the President met with the
Progressives Governors Forum at the Presidential Villa in Abuja at the time the
Supreme Court delivered judgement on the appeals seeking Sanwo-Olu’s removal
from office.
Recall that the Supreme Court had dismissed the
appeal by the Labour Party and its governorship candidate in the March 18
election, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, seeking disqualification of Sanwo-Olu and his
deputy, Obafemi Hamza, from the poll.
The apex court held that the appeal lacked merit for it to
survive.
In a unanimous judgment delivered by Justice Garba Lawal,
the Supreme Court held that the allegations of renouncing Nigerian citizenship
by the Lagos State Deputy Governor for the United States of America cannot be
used to disqualify the respondents.
Tinubu’s reaction to the ruling was disclosed by the
governor’s media aide, Gboyega Akosile, via a post on X.
According to Akosile: “President @officialABAT today
congratulated Governor @jidesanwoolu on the Supreme Court’s affirmation of his
2023 election victory.
“The President, while having a small bantering with the
governors after Progressive Governors Forum’s meeting earlier today at the
Villa, singled out Governor Sanwo-Olu for a warm handshake. Congratulations,
dear boss.”
