Biodun Oyebanji, governor of Ekiti, has declared three days
of mourning for Rotimi Akeredolu, the late governor of Ondo state.
Akeredolu died on Wednesday morning at the age of 67.
According to the Ondo government, the former governor died
of “complications from protracted prostate cancer”.
According to a statement by Yinka Oyebode, Oyebanji’s
special adviser on media, all flags at public buildings across the state are to
be flown at half-mast for the three days of mourning.
Oyebode said the governor also paid a condolence visit to
the family of the late Akeredolu at their Ibadan residence on Friday.
Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the governor of Ondo, had also declared a
three-day mourning in the state over the death of his immediate predecessor.
Aiyedatiwa described the death of Akeredolu as a “monumental
loss” to the people of Ondo state.
Seyi Makinde, Oyo state governor, had also reportedly
declared a three-day mourning in his state in honour of the late Akeredolu.
Since the death of Akeredolu, many prominent figures have
paid tribute to him.
In a statement on Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu described
Akeredolu as a man who moved Nigeria towards equity, fairness and justice.
He said the late governor “advocated against every form of
injustice in our country through the instrumentality of the law as a senior
advocate, attorney general of his beloved state, president of the Nigerian Bar
Association, and governor of Ondo state”.
