Liverpool vs Arsenal: Battle to go top of Premier League table

Last season, Arsenal travelled to Liverpool, sitting in pole position to win the Premier League title for the first time in almost 20 years.

The Gunners were flying high and had seen off Jurgen Klopp’s men 3-2 at the Emirates.

Within 20 minutes or so at Anfield, they raced into a two-goal lead, thanks to Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus.

The game eventually ended 2-2, with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino salvaging a point for Liverpool, who were enduring a stop-start campaign.

Arsenal finished five points behind Manchester City at the end of the campaign, while Liverpool did not make the top four.

This Saturday, however, their meeting in the late kick-off will be first against third. The Reds are only one point behind Aston Villa, having also played one less match.

Both teams have enjoyed a great start to this season and are threatening to end City’s three-year dominance on the league crown.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 10 home league matches against Arsenal including seven wins, but have fallen behind in five of those matches.

Mikel Arteta’s men are a more solid unit this season especially defensively and have added their firepower in attack with the in-form Kai Havertz.

Klopp, speaking after the 5-1 win over West Ham in the Carabao Cup, slammed the poor atmosphere and issued a rallying cry to supporters as Liverpool seek to avoid going scoreless in back-to-back Premier League home games for the first time since March 2021.

Fans will play their part in this one, but ultimately it will come down to the players on the pitch.
