Budget defense: Senate warns MDAs against sabotage

The Nigerian Senate has stated that it will not tolerate weak attitudes toward defense submissions from government workers in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The legislature stated that it was committed to continuing the budget’s implementation cycle from January to December.

Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, issued the warning on Tuesday in Abuja during a one-day retreat on the 2024 Appropriation Bill.

The retreat, hosted by the Senate Appropriations Committee, is titled ‘Budget and Budgetary Processes: Delivering Improved Outcomes of the 2024 Appropriation Bill’.

Akpabio, represented by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibril, stated that the consequences would not be palatable for any official or agency that frustrates the passage of the bill.

He stated that the 2024 Appropriation Bill was unquestionably a big national event.

According to him, the significance stemmed from the fact that it was another step in the pledges made by the 10th National Assembly to ensure an all-inclusive budget process for the greater national good and to accomplish the nation’s commitment to the budget cycle.

He praised the chairman and members of the appropriation committee for opening up the 2024 budget process to stakeholder interaction and feedback during the one-day retreat.

Akpabio stated that the stakeholders assembled were in the business of making sacrifices for the people and were committed to brainstorming, researching, and proposing various recommendations and solutions on behalf of the Nigerian people.

“We understand that the budget is about fiscal targets, resource allocation, public expenditure policy, productivity and efficiency.”
