A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Kano State, Alhassan Ado Doguwa has claimed that winning elections in Nigeria is beyond the casting of ballot papers.
The former majority leader of the House of Representatives, stated this during an interview with Channels TV while reacting to the controversy surrounding the Kano State Gubernatorial elections.
According to the party chieftain, in a democratic setting like Nigeria, several things including rules and regulations are considered before a winner of an election is declared, stressing that the rule of law must be followed.
“For me when you ask me about what is going on in Kano, the going on is usual, Kano has always been a progressive, proactive state in terms of politics and ideology,” Doguwa said.
“Winning election can be contested to win an election under the laid down rules and regulations as provided in the electoral act and in the constitution of the Federal Republic Nigeria. It is also part of what you must have to abide by to win a free and fair election.
“Free and fair elections are not only about counting ballots alone more or less even when the votes were counted, yet there were some votes that were said to be illegal votes”.
Recall that Abba Yusuf of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP was declared the winner of the March 18 gubernatorial poll in Kano State.
The election tribunal and the Appeal Court have, however, nullified the election, saying the governor was not qualified to run for the poll.
