Sanwo-Olu approves 25% discount for state-owned transport services

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, has approved the implementation of a 25 percent discount on state-owned transport services.

The 25 percent discount will commence on Tuesday (today).

The development is coming barely 24 hours after the Lagos state government discontinued the 50 percent discount on transport services.

In a notice on Saturday, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) said from November 6, transport fares would return to the status quo.

On July 31, the Lagos governor announced a 50 percent reduction in the fares charged by all state-owned transport services.

The governor had said the move was part of the palliatives being rolled out by the state government to cushion the effects of the petrol subsidy removal and the attendant hike in the prices of the commodity.

‘LAGOSIANS APPEAL’

In a statement on Monday, Kolawole Ojelabi, LAMATA’s head of corporate communication, said the governor decided to extend the passenger fare reduction by 25 percent due to the appeals from residents.

“Following appeals to the Governor, he has extended the passenger fare reduction by 25% across the regulated bus and rail transport services until another review is announced,” the statement reads.

“Within the three months period of the rebate, the pump price of diesel jumped from N867 in August to N1,300 in November 2023 representing about 50 percent jump.”
