Police ask Kano residents not to protest guber judgment

Muhammad Gumel, the police commissioner in Kano, has warned residents against “unlawfully” protesting the appeal court judgment sacking Abba Yusuf as governor.

On Friday, the court of appeal in Abuja upheld the verdict of the Kano state governorship petition tribunal that nullified the election of Yusuf.

On September 20, the tribunal had ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Yusuf.

Reacting to reports of organised protests in the state, the police commissioner said attempts to disrupt the peace in the state would be truncated and perpetrators would be arrested.

Abdullahi Haruna, the police spokesperson in the state, on Monday, said the command has garnered credible information that some groups of political party supporters are planning to stage protests.

“The information revealed that the intention of the protesters is to shut down the state in an action which may likely result in violence,” the statement reads.

“It’s on this note that the police command issued a warning to residents of the state to be extra careful as whoever intends to conduct any protest or procession should do so in accordance with the provisions of the law.

“Furthermore, you will all recall that prior to the court ruling, the leaderships of both NNPP and APC had been invited by the Kano state police command where a peace accord was signed on Thursday, 16th November 2023.”
