Former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani has said until
the country’s electoral system is reformed to block vote buying, recruitment of
leadership would remain only for the highest bidders.
Shehu Sani stated this in a post on his official X handle on
Sunday while reacting to reports of vote buying that marred the gubernatorial
elections conducted on Saturday in Imo, Kogi and Bayelsa States.
Some politicians were arrested by security operatives on
Saturday after they were caught with huge amounts of money, allegedly for vote
buying.
According to Shehu Sani, if the country continues to operate
a democratic system that encourages vote buying, only the highest bidders will
continue to rule.
The post reads, “As long as we operate a democratic system
that encourages and endorses the use of money to buy the votes of party
delegates and buy the votes of the electorate, our leadership recruitment and
electoral system will continue to be for the highest bidder”.
