Lagos ends 50% discount on fares of BRT, train, others

The Lagos Government said 50 per cent rebate in fares introduced for the use of its regulated transport system as a way of cushioning the pains of removal of fuel subsidy on 2 August will end on Monday, 6 November.

Lagos governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the 50 per cent reduction in fares of public transport services in the wake of removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu.

The 50 per cent reduction in fares applied for the use of Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) Standard routes, First and Last Mile, Rail and Ferry services.

The reduction was intended to cushion the harsh effect of fuel subsidy removal by Tinubu.

However, in a statement on Saturday, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LMATA) said fares for the use of the services will return to pre-August 2 level on Sunday.

“The 50% rebate in transport fare in the regulated transport system in Lagos ends on Sunday,” LAMATA said in a statement.

“From Monday, November 6, 2023, transport fare will return to the pre-2nd August 2023 rate,” it added.
