Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has disclosed that his
deputy, Philip Shaibu, has the constitutional right to contest for governor in
2024.
Obaseki, however, disclosed that the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) will decide if Shaibu will be the party’s flag bearer.
On Monday, Shaibu had officially declared his interest to
contest the state’s governorship election.
Speaking after declaring his interest, Shaibu said nobody
can stop him, adding that he would defeat Obaseki’s announced candidate.
He said this amid rift with Obaseki, but the duo had settled
their fight.
However, addressing journalists on Thursday, Obaseki said:
“The relationship as you know, has been cordial. He (Philip) wants to run for
the office I currently occupy and he is free to.
“I think as a Nigerian, he has the constitutional right to
run; nobody can or should stop him.
He added: “But only the PDP and our members can decide who
will become the flagbearer of the party at the gubernatorial election. I’m only
one of the millions of party members in Edo State. I don’t think my vote alone
will determine who becomes the party’s flagbearer.”
