Rivers crisis: Fubara, Wike meet in Aso Rock, exchange pleasantries

Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, and his predecessor Nyesom Wike, are currently attending a meeting of the police council.

The police council meeting is usually attended by the president, vice-president, 36 state governors, the minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), and inspector-general of police.

Wike and Fubara shook hands before the commencement of the meeting at the presidential villa.

Over the past few days, the political crisis in Rivers state has ignited speculations that all is not well between the duo.

Both men are meeting for the first time after the crisis that rocked Rivers state, where moves by 24 members of the state house of assembly to impeach Fubara resulted in turbulence.

On Sunday night, a section of the Rivers state assembly complex was gutted by fire.

There were speculations that the fire incident was orchestrated to prevent the lawmakers from initiating impeachment proceedings against Fubara.

On Monday, the Rivers house of assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Fubara.

Fubara visited the assembly complex to inspect the level of damage but his convoy was shot at and teargassed by security operatives.

Reacting to the development, Fubara said he has not committed any offence to warrant his impeachment, adding that he is ready to die over the political situation in the state.

The leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Edwin Clark, had accused Wike of being behind the plot to unlawfully remove Fubara, urging President Bola Tinubu to step in and call the FCT minister to order.

The police council is meeting to confirm the appointment of the inspector general of police.
