From
George Weah to Jay-Jay Okocha, African players have lit up the European leagues
over the last few decades. The modern crop of players can also hold their
weight against these names, and today, we've tried to narrow it down to the top
five African players currently plying their trade in Europe's top leagues.
5. Achraf Hakimi
It
feels like Hakimi has been hovering around the game's top level for much
longer, but the versatile Moroccan is only 24. Having won the Champions League
with Real Madrid and established himself as a guaranteed starter in the current
PSG setup, Hakimi is not only one of the best African players in Europe, but he
is also the most well-rounded. He competently performs in several defensive positions
or on the wing.
4. Mohammed Kudus
It's
hard to put any of these players in a specific order; they all bring a lot to
the table, and Kudus is another young rising African star who has been making
waves in Europe's most popular league, the EPL. West Ham surprised many people
last year and lifted their first trophy, making it their first in 43 years. For
those who enjoy betting on the EPL, West Ham regularly defies the odds, punching
above their weight and giving the best teams in the league something to
consider. Despite losing their star man, Declan Rice, West Ham is definitely
one of the teams to keep an eye on when betting on the EPL.
3.Serhou Guirassy
Despite
being born in France, Serhou plays for the Guinean national team. If you're
looking at pure form, you could argue that Guirassy is the best African player
in European football. Having started the 23/24 season for VfB Stuggart and scoring
13 goals in the first seven games, he broke a record
previously held by Robert Lewandowski. If he keeps up such scintillating form, he could end up
ranked as one of the top players in Europe.
2. Mo Salah
Liverpool's
EPL and UEFA Champions League-winning forward and holder of multiple EPL
individual accolades, Salah is one of the best strikers in Liverpool's history.
Once he has retired, he will go down as one of the greatest African players of
all time. The Egyptian has bagged a sensational number of goals for the
Merseyside-based club, notching up 142 goals in 226 games. While he is
consistently linked with a move away from Europe and will likely depart from
Liverpool soon, there's no denying he's still one of the stars of African
football.
1. Victor Osimhen
Osimhen
is one of the shining stars of world football, having fired Napoli to the Serie
A title last year and currently having scored 20 goals in 27 games for his
national team. The stage is set for the incredible Nigerian talent to become
the leading light of African football. He is already the
most expensive African player of all time, so there is a lot of pressure
on the young man's shoulders.
He spent the summer being linked with moves to Manchester City, Real Madrid and PSG, but Victor remained at Napoli. However, we'll likely see the 24-year-old striker complete a big-money move over the next couple of years after being nominated for this year's Ballon d'Or.
