Akintola Williams, Nigeria’s first chartered accountant, dies at 104

 


Akintola Williams, Nigeria’s first indigenous chartered accountant, is dead.

 

Williams died on Monday at the age of 104.

 

He celebrated his 104th birthday on August 9.

 

He was a pioneer of Nigeria’s accounting profession and played a significant role in shaping the country’s financial sector.

 

Born in 1919, Williams obtained a degree in commerce (majoring in banking and finance) from the University of London in 1946.

 

In 1949, Williams became the first person from sub-saharan Africa to become a chartered accountant after he passed the qualifying examination of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW).

 

He was among the founders of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), formerly known as the Association of Accountants in Nigeria.

 

Williams worked as an assessment officer at the Inland Revenue from 1950 to 1952.
