‘We strongly support ECOWAS’ — France backs bid to quash Niger Republic coup

Catherine Colonna, the French minister for Europe and foreign affairs, says France is “strongly” in support of efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to “defeat” the coup in the Niger Republic.

Colonna spoke on Saturday when she visited Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou, prime minister of the Niger Republic, at Quai d’Orsay.

The French minister was accompanied by Aichatou Boulama, France’s ambassador to Niger.

On July 25, a coup was staged in Niger, leading to the ouster of President Mohamed Bazoum and other political leaders from office.

Abdourahmane Tiani, former head of Bazoum’s presidential guard, later declared himself as the head of state.

President Bola Tinubu, chairperson of ECOWAS, had subsequently said military force would be deployed to Niger if Bazoum is not reinstated in one week.

Commenting on the series of events on Saturday, the French minister called on the coup plotters to immediately return to democratic rule.

“France strongly and firmly supports ECOWAS’s efforts to defeat this coup attempt,” she said.

Colonna said France remains committed to the future of Niger and the stability of the entire region.

“ECOWAS gave the putschists a seven-day deadline to end their coup. It expires tomorrow, Sunday, August 6,” she said.

“France solemnly calls on those responsible for this coup attempt to release President Bazoum and all members of his government, and to allow the immediate return to constitutional and democratic order.”

  1. Rubbish !! The West can't cajole or push Africans any more. We are more than capable of dealing with our own internal problems without Western interference. Tinubu and his puppets would be foolish to attack Niger for their selfish interests. Look at the war in Ukraine, Russia thought it would be a walk in the park, but it is still going on. If the so called Ecowas attacks Niger, it will lead to a long and prolonged war because many countries are ready to fight on the part of Niger. Tinubu is in a hurry to attack Niger simply to divert attention from his internal court case here in Nigeria

  5. Ukraine could go to war because they were not getting any significant aid to survive before war, only military aid during the war. Can niger survive now without US, EU and UN aids? We black people should start paying quality attention to education, technology and productivity before we start claiming we have a continent and that we don't want homosexuality and the likes.

  7. By how much have the black youth been able to use technology to change the situation of the continent? They do "wuruwuru to the answer" with sharp practices and they say they are wise. Yet, they are running in droves to the same western world that they claim are the oppressors. The Russians and Chinese that won't allow them into their countries are the perfect ones. I laugh in Spanish.
